Where it comes from

The story of Darrius

Darius I ruled the Persian empire from 522 BC, built Persepolis, organized the satrapies and had his account of his own accession carved three hundred feet up a cliff at Behistun in Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian — a trilingual text that became the key to reading cuneiform. The name reaches modern use through the Bible and through American naming, where Darrius is one of several spellings.

Meaning

holding firm the good

From Old Persian Darayavaush, joining a verb meaning to hold or possess to a word for good; the Behistun inscription, which Darius had cut into a cliff in three languages, is what allowed cuneiform to be deciphered at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Darrius went to 27 boys in 2025, but Darius is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 349, which makes it the 602nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 3,347 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 4,894 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 63,262 for Darrius itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
