Where it comes from

Our story of Darrin

Our story of Darrin starts in a decade when American names were being made rather than inherited, and a two-syllable shape with a soft ending was exactly what people wanted. Then a comedy about a witch married to an advertising man ran from 1964 for eight seasons, and the husband was called Darrin — and the chart shows the name's peak in the middle of that first year. Whether the show made the name or simply caught it at the right moment is not recoverable, but the two curves sit on top of each other.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No established origin. The most-repeated suggestions are an Irish surname, Ó Dubhthaigh, and a reshaping of Darrell, which is a Norman place name from Airelle. Neither is documented as the source of the given name. It appears in the twentieth century as something close to a coinage.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Darrin went to 34 boys in 2025, but Darin, Darryn and Daryn are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 77, which makes it the 851st most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,528 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 22,183 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 50,238 for Darrin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A soft, even two-syllable shape that sits well with almost any surname.
  • It is familiar without being common now, which is a difficult combination.
  • No pronunciation ambiguity at all in English.
What to consider
  • At least four spellings were in simultaneous use, so it will be written wrongly often.
  • It has no recovered meaning to offer.
  • The name is tightly dated to the 1960s and 1970s.
