The story of Daris
Herodotus described the royal couriers of the Persian empire, riding in relays along roads built under Darius and his successors, and said that neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night kept them from their appointed rounds. In 1914 the words were carved above the James Farley Post Office in New York, and Americans have taken them as the postal service's motto ever since. Daris appears in the American record for boys and girls through the twentieth century.

A short form of Darius, or a respelling of Doris
For boys Daris most likely shortens Darius, the Persian king's name, often read as 'holder of the good'. For girls it may respell Doris. The record cannot separate them.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Dewie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Daris's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dewie climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dewie's path sketches the road Daris is walking now.
