Damein
Masculine · “to tame”
A diamond is something that cannot be tamed. Greek adamas is the untameable — a- for not, damas from the verb to subdue — and it was used of the hardest substance anyone knew. The same verb gives Damian, and English got adamant and diamond out of the same word by two different roads.

The story of Damein
Cosmas and Damian were twin physicians in third-century Syria who are said to have treated people without charging, which earned them the Greek nickname anargyroi, the silverless ones. They were executed under Diocletian and became the patron saints of doctors, surgeons and pharmacists. The best-known story about them is a posthumous one: they are said to have appeared to a sleeping man with a diseased leg and replaced it with the leg of a recently dead Ethiopian, which medieval painters loved and which is one of the earliest transplant narratives anywhere. The name's root, meanwhile, went the other way and produced the word for the hardest thing on earth.
Meaning
to tame, to subdue
Greek damazo, to tame or overcome, behind the name Damianos. The negative of the same root gives adamas, unconquerable, which became both adamant and, through a Latin corruption, diamond. Damein is an American respelling and changes nothing audible.

Damein's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Giacomo climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Giacomo's path sketches the road Damein is walking now.
