An alphabet is named after the man this name comes from, and he did not invent it. Cyril, a Greek missionary to the Slavs, devised a script called Glagolitic; his students, working after his death, produced a simpler one and named it for their teacher. Cyrillic is used by a quarter of a billion people, and its name is a memorial rather than a credit.

Where it comes from

The story of Cyrilla

Cyril and his brother Methodius were sent from Constantinople to Moravia in the ninth century and set about translating scripture into Slavic — which required an alphabet, because none existed. Cyril produced Glagolitic, a genuinely original script; the Cyrillic that carries his name came afterward, from his followers in Bulgaria, and is closer to Greek. Both brothers are honored as saints across the Orthodox and Catholic churches. The feminine Cyrilla appears in American records from the 1890s, arriving with Central European Catholic families, and it has always been rare here.

Meaning

lordly, of the lord

From the Greek kyrios, lord or master — the word used throughout the Greek New Testament for God and for Christ, and still used in Greek for an ordinary mister. Kyrillos is the adjective built on it, and Cyrilla is the Latin feminine, formed with the -illa ending Latin uses to make women's names from men's.

Pronouncing Cyrilla

sih-RILL-uh

Three syllables, stress in the middle, which the doubled l signals. The Greek and Slavic forms begin with a k sound rather than an s; English says the c soft before a y, which is why the name sounds so different from Kirill.

Cyrilla sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cyrilla went to 6 girls in 2025, but Cirilla is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 72, which makes it the 888th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,320 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 22,323 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Cyrilla itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a documented ninth-century figure behind it whose work is still in daily use by millions.
  • Cyra and Rilla are both usable and belong to different centuries.
  • The meaning is one word long and easy to give.
  • It is genuinely rare, so a child will not meet another.
What to consider
  • It belongs to an older American generation and carries that flavor.
  • Cirilla, Cyrila and Cyrilla all appear in records, so the spelling has to be dictated.
  • The initial sound is an s in English and a k everywhere the name is native, which surprises relatives abroad.
