The story of Cuong
Vietnamese was once written in Chinese characters, and the Latin alphabet now used, quốc ngữ, was worked out by Portuguese and Italian missionaries and codified by the French Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes, whose dictionary appeared in the seventeenth century. That is why Vietnamese spells the k sound as Portuguese and Italian would: c before a, o and u, as in Cường, but k before e and i. Vietnamese families brought Cường to America, where the marks were dropped and it became Cuong.

Fashion outlook
Cuong sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
