The story of Cozette
In Les Misérables the child is called Euphrasie by her mother and Cosette by everyone else, and the narrator says the nickname displaced the name entirely — which is a small piece of accurate observation about how naming actually works. The name entered use from the novel and the musical adaptation renewed it. Cozette with a z is an American respelling.

Not established
Hugo coined it as a diminutive; the character's actual name in the novel is Euphrasie. Readings connecting it to French chosette, a little thing, are plausible and not documented as Hugo's intention. Nothing predates the 1862 novel.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
