Where it comes from

The story of Courtlyn

The Courtenays were a substantial Anglo-Norman family who held Devon for centuries and produced earls, bishops and a claimant to the throne of Jerusalem, and a story circulated that their name came from an ancestor with a short nose. Similar stories attach to a good many aristocratic surnames, because a nickname origin is more entertaining than a territorial one, and because families with heralds could commission the entertainment. The evidence points to the place: Courtenay in the Loiret, whose own name is Gallo-Roman, built on a personal name with a suffix meaning the estate of. The American given name comes from the surname, went female in the 1970s, and by the 1990s was generating extensions like this one.
