The story of Cort
Konrad was one of the principal names of medieval Germany, and Saint Conrad of Constance gave it religious standing. Dutch produced Coenraad and clipped it to Coert and Cort; German produced Kurt and Kort, and Kurt became a name in its own right long ago. Dutch settlement in the Hudson valley brought Cort to America in the seventeenth century, and it survives there as a surname — Cortlandt Street in Manhattan carries it. Its use as a given name is small and steady, with a mid-century peak that fits the general fashion for short, blunt men's names in those decades.
Meaning
bold counsel
Germanic kuoni means bold or brave, and rad means counsel or advice — the same second element as in Conrad, and the first as in the modern German kuhn. Konrad was borne by four German kings and a duke of Franconia, and its short forms Kurt, Kort and Cort became independent names. The derivation is settled and appears in every standard reference.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Delroy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cort's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Delroy climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Delroy's path sketches the road Cort is walking now.
Cort sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
