The story of Corrie
The same landform has three names in English and all three are borrowed: corrie from Gaelic, cirque from French, and cwm from Welsh. Geologists use all three interchangeably, which is unusual and happened because the feature was studied in the Alps, the Highlands and Snowdonia at roughly the same time by people using their local word. A corrie is carved when snow collects in a hollow, compacts into ice, and grinds backwards and downwards into the rock; when the ice goes, the bowl and often a small lake are left. As a name, the Dutch line is the likeliest for many American Corries: Cornelia gives Corrie, and it has been ordinary in the Netherlands for a century.

The trade-off
- A settled Gaelic meaning naming a landform anyone can be shown a photograph of.
- It genuinely serves either child, and the record shows a real minority of boys.
- Two syllables that everyone can say and nearly spell.
- Corey and Cory are the commoner spellings and read as boys' names.
- It leans to girls without settling, so a form will guess and will sometimes be wrong.
- It is a pet form of several unrelated names, so the meaning depends on the family.
