Where it comes from

The story of Constantinos

The Ottomans did not rename Constantinople. They used several names for the city — Konstantiniyye, Dersaadet, Islambol and others — and Konstantiniyye, which is simply the Arabic-Turkish form of the Greek name, was the official one on coins and documents for most of the empire's history. Istanbul existed alongside it in speech, derived from a Greek phrase meaning to the city, which is what Greeks called it when they were not naming it. The change to a single official name came only in the nineteen-twenties and thirties under the republic, with the post office eventually refusing mail addressed to Constantinople. So a Greek imperial name survived the conquest by four and a half centuries, in Turkish, on official paper.

Meaning

steadfast; constant

From the Latin adjective for standing firm, with the ending that made it a personal name. It became one of the commonest names in the Greek world through the emperor and the city, and Greek has kept the full Latin form where French, Italian and English all shortened it.

Four syllables with the stress on the third, as Greek marks it. English speakers tend to move the weight forward, and most bearers answer to a short form anyway.

Constantinos sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1969, with 20 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Constantinos sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two quite different Greek short forms come out of it, plus an English one.
  • The meaning is documented and straightforwardly positive.
  • It is the full and correct Greek form rather than an approximation.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is long for forms designed around shorter names.
  • Konstantinos and Constantine are both recorded and the spelling will need giving.
  • English speakers will stress it differently from Greek ones.
