In the Ulster Cycle of Irish legend, Conchobar mac Nessa is king at Emain Macha, and one late tale says he carried a sling-stone lodged in his skull for years and died when, told of the crucifixion of Christ, he flew into such a rage that it burst. English turned Conchobar into Connor, dropping the a of its last syllable; Connar keeps a vowel closer to the old spelling, though American families most likely wrote it as it sounded. It belongs to the great late-twentieth-century rise of Connor in the United States.
