The story of Clint
Clinton was an English place name and then an American political surname — DeWitt Clinton built the Erie Canal, George Clinton was vice president twice — and families named sons for them. The clipping Clint was registered as a legal name in its own right from the 1930s and rose sharply through the 1960s, peaking in the mid-1960s.

fenced settlement
Through Clinton, generally read as the Old English clyne, 'fence' or 'hill', plus tun, 'farmstead' or 'settlement'. Some accounts derive the first element from a personal name instead. The tun element is secure; the first is not. There is also an unrelated northern English dialect word 'clint' meaning a rocky cliff.

The Doyle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Clint's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Doyle climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Doyle's path sketches the road Clint is walking now.
