Where it comes from

The story of Clemente

Clemens described a mild climate and a mild disposition together, and English inclement weather still carries the first. Fourteen popes have taken the name. Roberto Clemente, the Puerto Rican baseball player, died in 1972 delivering earthquake relief to Nicaragua and is one of the most respected figures in the sport's history. The name is used across Italy, Spain and Latin America.

Meaning

merciful, mild

From Latin clemens, mild or gentle, used of weather and of temperament alike; the same root gives clemency and the phrase inclement weather, which preserves the older sense.

Clemente sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 58 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning that is plain and warm.
  • Clem is a complete short form in its own right.
  • A genuinely admirable modern bearer behind it.
What to consider
  • It reads as of an older generation to Spanish and Italian speakers.
  • Clement is the English form and looks quite different.
  • Eight letters and three syllables is a fair amount for early handwriting.
