Samuel Clemens took a riverboat leadsman's call for two fathoms of water as a pen name and became, under it, the most recognizable American of his century. The given name and the surname are the same word.

Where it comes from

The story of Clemens

The word survives in English in two places that look unrelated and are not. Clemency is what a court extends when it decides not to apply the full penalty, and clement weather is weather that is not applying its full penalty either; both are the same Latin adjective doing the same job on different subjects. As a name it went into the calendar early, was taken by a long line of popes, and settled into German, Dutch and Scandinavian use in exactly this spelling, which is how it reached American registers. The literary Clemens arrived by the other route, as a family surname carried from Virginia to Missouri, and his choice of a pen name is one of the few in American letters that everybody can explain and nobody uses: the man is universally known by two words shouted from a riverboat, and his own name survives mainly as a piece of trivia attached to them.

Meaning

merciful, mild

The Latin adjective means gentle, mild or merciful, and it is the direct ancestor of the English word clemency and of the phrase clement weather. The name has been in continuous use since the first Christian centuries, carried by more than a dozen popes, and the meaning has never been in doubt. In this form it is the unaltered Latin nominative rather than a national adaptation of it, which is why it looks like a surname to English eyes.

How the name formed

  1. The Latin adjective for merciful
  2. An early Christian name and a papal one
  3. Clemens in German, Dutch and Scandinavian use
  4. Carried to America as both a given name and a surname

KLEM-enz

Two syllables, stress on the first, with the final s voiced like a z. German gives it the same shape. The English form of the name drops the s entirely and becomes Clement, which is a different spelling of the same word rather than a different name.

Clemens sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 66 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Clemens sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine Latin name with a documented meaning and eighteen centuries of continuous use.
  • It works as a given name in German, Dutch and Scandinavian families without any adjustment.
  • Clem is short, plain and completely unpretentious, which balances a formal full name.
What to consider
  • It reads as a surname to Americans, and a great many people will assume it is one.
  • The final s will be dropped by anyone who knows the name as Clement.
  • It is strongly period-flavored in American use and has not come back with the other Latin names.
