The story of Clarita
Clare was a young noblewoman of Assisi who left her family to follow Francis in 1212 and founded an order of women committed to absolute poverty, which she spent forty years defending against papal officials who kept trying to give them property. She wrote the first monastic rule known to have been composed by a woman, and it was approved two days before she died. The television patronage rests on an incident recorded in her canonization documents, in which she saw and heard the Christmas liturgy from her sickbed, and Pius XII made her patron of the medium in 1958. Her name is the ordinary Latin word for bright, and it has produced Clara, Claire, Chiara, Clarita and the surname Sinclair.
