Where it comes from

Our story of Clarie

Clare of Assisi left a wealthy family to follow Francis, founded an order of women who owned nothing at all, and spent forty years arguing with successive popes to be allowed to keep the poverty she had chosen. She won, days before she died. The television patronage comes from a story in her canonization records: too ill to attend Mass, she is said to have seen and heard the service on the wall of her room. A pope in the nineteen-fifties, looking for a patron for the new medium, picked her for it, which is how a thirteenth-century woman who refused to own furniture ended up on the letterhead of broadcasting associations.

Fashion outlook

Clarie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is ancient, documented and used across Europe.
  • Clare comes off it as a short form and is a complete name on its own.
  • It is read correctly at first sight by nearly everybody.
What to consider
  • Clarie, Clarrie and Claree are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
  • It reads as an affectionate form to some people, so formal settings will ask what it stands for.
  • No origin is documented for this spelling, so the meaning question belongs to the shorter name.
