Cintia
Feminine · “of Mount Cynthus”
Cynthia is a mountain. Artemis and Apollo were born on Delos at the foot of Mount Cynthus, and both took epithets from it — she was the Cynthian woman, he the Cynthian man. Neither name says anything about what they did. They say where they came from.

The story of Cintia
Because Artemis was the moon, her epithet became a poetic word for it, and English poets used Cynthia to mean the moon for about three hundred years without troubling to mention Artemis at all. Roman poets had done the same. The name reached English properly in the sixteenth century with the vogue for classical names and has been in use since. Southern European languages spell it as they say it: Spanish, Portuguese and Italian have no use for the y or the h, so Cintia is the plain version of the same word. The h in the English spelling is there because Greek had a letter English does not, and the y because Greek had a vowel English does not either.
Meaning
of Mount Cynthus
From Greek Kynthia, an epithet of Artemis meaning the woman of Cynthus, a hill on the island of Delos where she and Apollo were said to have been born. Cintia is the Spanish, Portuguese and Italian spelling, which drops the y and the h that English keeps from the Greek.

The Clayton test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cintia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Clayton climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Clayton's path sketches the road Cintia is walking now.
Cintia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Greek origin naming a real hill that is still there.
- The same spelling in Spanish and Portuguese, and one letter from the Italian.
- Three short forms, one of which is a full name in English.
- English readers will supply the y and the h and say Cynthia.
- Cynthia is far commoner in America, so this spelling marks the family as Spanish-speaking, which may be the point.
- It is close to Cinzia and Sintia, both of which are used.
