Where it comes from

The story of Christoph

Christophoros was a name and a description among Greek-speaking Christians before there was a saint attached to it. The figure of Christopher appears in the East from the fifth century and reaches the West later, where his legend acquires the river, the child growing impossibly heavy, and the staff that flowers; he became patron of travelers on the strength of it. German took the name as Christoph, without the final -er that English adds, and it has been a standard German man's name since the Reformation. It entered United States records with German-speaking families and reached its best year in 1969.

Meaning

Christ-bearer

Greek Christophoros, from Christos, anointed, and pherein, to bear or carry. The original sense was almost certainly spiritual, someone who carries Christ within them, which is how early Christian writers used it. The literal reading that produced the river legend is a later interpretation of the same word, and one of the clearest cases of a story being generated by a name rather than the other way round.

Christoph sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1971, with 32 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Christoph went to 13 boys in 2025, but Kristoff is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 27, which makes it the 901st most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,545 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 63,262 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 131,390 for Christoph itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
