The story of Christoper
The name was originally metaphorical: a Christophoros carried Christ within himself, and early Christians used it in that sense. The legend that grew around it is much later and takes the metaphor at face value. A giant looking for the greatest master to serve carries travelers across a river, takes up a child who becomes unbearably heavy, and is told that he has carried the weight of the world and its maker. From that story he became the patron of travelers, his image was painted at the entrance of churches so that a glance would protect the day's journey, and his medal is still on car dashboards. The saint was removed from the universal calendar in 1969 on the grounds that almost nothing about him is historical.
