Saint Christopher's legend was invented to explain his name. Christophoros means Christ-bearer, and it was almost certainly a title for any Christian; someone later read it literally and produced the story of a giant who carried a child across a river and found him unbearably heavy, because the child was carrying the world.

Where it comes from

Our story of Chrislyn

Our reading is that Christopher is a rare case of a story built backwards from a name, and it is worth knowing because it shows how much of hagiography works that way. Christophoros, Christ-bearer, was used in the early church as a description of any believer, on the understanding that a Christian carries Christ within. Somewhere in the transmission it was taken as a description of an individual act, and the legend followed: a huge man who wanted to serve the greatest king, who was told to carry travelers across a river, and who one night carried a child whose weight nearly drowned him. The child identified himself. The story is not attested early and was removed from the general Roman calendar in 1969 on the grounds that almost nothing about the saint is historical. The name outlived the revision entirely, and its clipped form now anchors a whole family of American compounds.

Meaning

Greek christos and pherein, Christ and to carry

Chrislyn joins the Chris stem to the American -lyn ending. Chris serves both Christopher, from Greek christophoros, Christ-bearer, and Christina, from christiana, a Christian woman. Christos means anointed and translates Hebrew mashiach. The -lyn ending descends from Welsh llyn, a lake, through the American name Lynn, and carries no meaning here. It peaks in 2002.

Chrislyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 29 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Chrislyn went to 12 girls in 2025, but Krislyn, Chrislynn and Krislynn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 48, which makes it the 912th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,450 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 33,485 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Chrislyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
