Cheyann
Feminine
Cheyann respells a nation's name until an English name appears inside it. Cheyenne ends in a syllable that English readers handle badly; write it -ann instead and the word suddenly contains Ann, one of the oldest women's names in Europe. That is a very deliberate piece of respelling, and it is the whole difference between this version and the standard one.

From Šahíyena to Cheyann
The story of Cheyann
The Cheyenne moved onto the plains in the eighteenth century and became one of the great horse peoples, and their name entered English through the fur trade and the army. It attached to a river, a town and eventually the capital of Wyoming, and from there into American naming — first as a place name and then, in the second half of the twentieth century, as a girls' name in real numbers. The -ann respelling belongs to the peak of that use and does two things at once: it simplifies the ending and it smuggles a familiar English name into the word.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Cheyenne is not a Cheyenne word. It comes from the Dakota Šahíyena, which their neighbors used for them and which is usually read as something like people of a different speech or, more literally, little Cree. The Cheyenne call themselves Tsitsistas. The name therefore has a meaning in a language that is not the one it names, which is a common pattern and worth stating plainly.

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The standard spelling is said the same way, but the -enne ending gives English readers pause where -ann does not, which is exactly the problem this version solves.

The Dorsey test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cheyann's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dorsey climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dorsey's path sketches the road Cheyann is walking now.
Cheyann sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The ending is unambiguous to any English reader, which the standard spelling is not.
- Ann is visible inside it and is available as a plain everyday name.
- Two syllables and a firm stress, so it is never mispronounced once seen.
- Cheyenne is the standard spelling and will be written on nearly everything.
- It names a living nation, and using a people's name as a personal name is something some members of that nation object to.
- The word is not the Cheyenne people's own name for themselves, which is worth knowing before explaining it to anyone.
