Cheng and Zheng can be the same Chinese name. Two systems for writing Chinese in the Latin alphabet were in use through the twentieth century, and they disagree spectacularly: Peking and Beijing, Mao Tse-tung and Mao Zedong, Cheng and Zheng are pairs, not different names.

The story of Cheng
Wade-Giles was devised in the nineteenth century by British scholars and dominated English writing about China until the 1980s; Pinyin was developed in the People's Republic in the 1950s and is now standard almost everywhere. They make opposite choices about several consonants, which is why the same syllable appears as ch in one and zh or j in the other. The most spectacular casualty of the switch is a fifteenth-century admiral: Cheng Ho in the old system, Zheng He in the new, who commanded fleets of enormous ships on seven voyages as far as East Africa decades before any European rounded the Cape, and whose expeditions were then stopped and the records largely destroyed.

depends on the character
Cheng transliterates several distinct Chinese characters with different meanings and tones — a common surname, a word meaning to accomplish, one meaning sincere, one meaning clear. The romanization cannot distinguish them, and neither system was designed to.
Pronouncing Cheng
CHUNG
One syllable. Mandarin gives it a tone that English cannot reproduce, and the vowel sits between the u of cup and the e of bed. The Pinyin Zheng starts with a sound closer to j.

The Lavaughn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cheng's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lavaughn climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lavaughn's path sketches the road Cheng is walking now.
Cheng sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable, which carries well and cannot be misheard.
- It serves either child, and the records show both.
- It is a real and common Chinese name rather than an approximation.
- The tone cannot be recorded on an American form, so part of the name is lost.
- Which Chinese character it stands for cannot be recovered from the spelling either.
- The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys on every form.
