The story of Chantel
Saints usually give their given names to later generations; Jeanne de Chantal gave her surname instead, and it took three centuries to happen. She founded the Order of the Visitation with Francis de Sales, was canonized in 1767, and remained a mostly regional French devotion until the twentieth century, when Chantal became a fashionable French girls' name in the 1940s and 1950s. It crossed into English-speaking use in the 1960s and 1970s, respelled as Chantel, Chantelle and Shantel to fit English reading habits, since the French final -al is not the sound English readers expect. The American figures for Chantel peak in 1990.

From a French place name, probably "stone, boulder"
Chantal is a southern French place name, generally derived from Occitan cantal, a stone or boulder. The widespread reading song, from French chanter, is a folk etymology encouraged by the spelling; the name is not from that verb. Chantel and Chantelle are English respellings of Chantal. The final -elle in the longer form is a genuine French feminine ending, from Latin -ella.

shahn-TELL
Two syllables, stress on the second, with the ch said as sh in the French way. French Chantal ends in a flat ahl rather than an ell, so the English respelling has changed the vowel as well as the letters.

The Leann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chantel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leann climbed just as high around 1968, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leann's path sketches the road Chantel is walking now.
