Chanie
Feminine · “Hebrew Channah”
Yiddish is a Germanic language written in Hebrew letters, with a Hebrew religious vocabulary and a Slavic layer on top. Its names work the same way: Chanie is Hannah with a Yiddish diminutive ending, said with a guttural ch that German has and English does not, spelled here in Latin letters that cannot show it.

The story of Chanie
Yiddish grew up among Jewish communities in the Rhineland from about the tenth century, taking its grammar and most of its everyday vocabulary from Middle High German, its religious and scholarly vocabulary from Hebrew and Aramaic, and, after the eastward migration, a substantial Slavic layer from Polish, Ukrainian and Russian. It is written in the Hebrew alphabet with vowels marked, which makes it easier to read than Hebrew itself. Its name stock reflects the same layering: Hebrew names in Yiddish forms, Germanic names, and a set of purely Yiddish inventions. The diminutive system is rich, with -ele, -le, -ie and -ke all available, and the forms carry real affection rather than being merely short. Chanie, Rivkie, Sorele and Malkie are all built this way. Romanising them is lossy, since the ch has no English equivalent.
Meaning
Hebrew Channah, favor or grace
From Hebrew channah, from a root meaning favor or grace, the mother of Samuel in the first book of Samuel. Chanie is the Yiddish diminutive, formed with the -ie or -le ending that Yiddish uses for affectionate forms. The initial ch represents the guttural sound of German ach, not the ch of church. It peaks in the American data in 1893.

Pronouncing Chanie
KHAH-nee
Two syllables, stress on the first. The ch is the sound of Scottish loch, made at the back of the throat. English speakers without it substitute h or k, and the spelling ch regularly produces a CHAY-nee reading from people who have never heard the name.
