Where it comes from

Our story of Chancy

Hazard was a game. It is played with two dice, the rules are genuinely complicated — the caster names a main, throws, and the outcomes branch — and it was the standard gambling game of English taverns and gaming houses for centuries before craps developed out of it in New Orleans. Chaucer's Pardoner preaches against it. The word came through French from a Spanish or Arabic source, often given as az-zahr, the die, though the derivation is not certain; what is certain is that the danger sense came second, from the game rather than from anything else. So a hazard warning on a road sign is, at the root, a reference to gambling, and the chance of an accident is a description of a throw.

The surname it may shorten is Norman and names a place in France; the adjective means risky. Both were available to American families, and the record holds the spelling without indicating either.

Chancy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1978, with 26 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Chancy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Chance detaches as a ready-made short form.
What to consider
  • Chauncey, Chancey and Chancie will all be written for it.
  • It matches an English adjective meaning risky, which readers hear.
  • Nothing records whether a surname or the word was intended.
