The story of Chalmers
On a May morning in 1843 the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland met in Edinburgh, and when the retiring moderator had finished reading a protest, Thomas Chalmers stood up and walked out. Something over four hundred ministers followed him down the hill in front of a crowd, giving up their churches, their houses and their stipends over the question of whether a landowner could impose a minister on a parish that did not want him. They founded a new church that afternoon and had raised the money for hundreds of new buildings within a few years. Nothing on that scale has happened to a national church before or since, and it is still called the Disruption.
Meaning
of the chambers
The surname belongs to the class that names a household office rather than a trade or a place, and it is one of a family of Scots forms that includes Chambers. Names of this kind — the ones ending in an s that used to mean of the — record a job somebody held in a great house four or five hundred years ago, which is why they cluster in the parts of Scotland where great houses were.

Fashion outlook
Chalmers sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a surname-name with a documented history and a genuinely dramatic story behind it.
- It has never been fashionable, which means it has never had a decade attached to it.
- The sound is unusual without being difficult, and the spelling is stable.
- The silent l is invisible to American readers and the name will be pronounced with it.
- It reads unambiguously as a surname and some people will treat it as one.
- It is out of use entirely, so there is no current model for how it wears on a child.
