Where it comes from

The story of Chadd

Bede says Chad insisted on going about his diocese on foot, as the apostles had, and that Archbishop Theodore, who had a diocese the size of a kingdom to cover and no patience, ordered him to ride and helped him into the saddle himself when he would not. Chad became the first bishop of the Mercians, died of plague, and his shrine at Lichfield was a pilgrimage site until the Reformation. The name went out of use and came back in twentieth-century America. Doubling the final d, as this spelling does, is something English does not otherwise do at the end of a name.

battle

The Old English Ceadda is probably from a Brittonic word for battle, which would make it a Celtic name in an Anglo-Saxon mouth. The derivation is likely and not certain.

Chadd sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 105 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Chadd sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and five letters, with no possible mispronunciation.
  • It has a documented English history reaching back to the seventh century.
  • It works well in front of long surnames, where fuller names get crowded.
What to consider
  • Chad is the standard spelling and will be written instead, every time.
  • The word has acquired an American slang sense in the last decade that the name did not ask for.
  • It is heavily generation-marked to the nineteen-seventies and eighties.
