The story of Chace
Norman French brought hunting vocabulary into English along with the Norman appetite for hunting, and chace gave both the surname Chase and the English word for a tract of hunting land — Cannock Chase and Cranborne Chase still carry it. The surname reached America early and became a first name there in the twentieth century, one of the most successful of the short blunt surname-names. The Chace spelling has stayed the rarer of the two, and it has the advantage of looking like a family name rather than like a verb.
Meaning
the hunt; a huntsman
From Old French chace, a hunt or a hunting ground, from chacier, 'to pursue' — the same root that gives English catch. The surname was given to a huntsman or to someone who lived by a chase, which in English also meant an unenclosed tract of land kept for hunting. The reading is documented; the -ce spelling is the older surname form rather than a modern respelling.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- One syllable, said correctly by everyone, and easy for a small child to write.
- A documented English surname with a clear occupational meaning behind it.
- The -ce spelling is genuinely older, so it is not an invented variant.
- Chase is far more common, and this spelling will be corrected in writing for life.
- It is also an ordinary English verb, so the name carries a small pun everywhere it goes.
- One syllable leaves nothing to shorten and no longer form to grow into.
