Cesare
Masculine
Caesar stopped being a name and became a job. German took it as Kaiser, Russian as tsar, Turkish as kayser — three language families using one Roman family name as the word for an emperor. Very few words have been promoted that thoroughly.

The story of Cesare
One story about the name should be cleared up. The caesarean section is not named after Julius Caesar. His mother was alive decades after his birth, and at that period the operation was performed only on women who were already dead or dying — the point was to save the child. The likelier source is the Latin verb caedere, to cut, or a Roman law requiring the operation in certain circumstances. The name's own history is grander: it belonged to one branch of the Julii, was carried by the man who ended the Republic, was adopted as a title by every emperor after him, and ended up as the ordinary word for a ruler from Berlin to Istanbul.

Not established
The Romans themselves offered four explanations for the cognomen and settled on none. Cesare is the Italian form, said in three syllables, and it belongs to the Renaissance rather than to antiquity — Italians have used it as a given name since the fifteenth century.

The Eleuterio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cesare's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eleuterio climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eleuterio's path sketches the road Cesare is walking now.
Cesare sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One of the most recognized names in world history, in its Italian form.
- Three open syllables with every vowel sounded.
- It is a current Italian name rather than a classical revival.
- The c is a ch in Italian and an s in English, so the name is said two entirely different ways.
- English readers will silence the final e and produce Caesar.
- The association with one Roman is total and not something a family can shape.
