Where it comes from

The story of Cerina

Ceres had the most practical job in the Roman pantheon and one of the oldest cults in the city, and her name survives in the word for what her grain becomes. When astronomers found the first object between Mars and Jupiter, on the first day of 1801, they named it after her, and it is still the largest thing in the asteroid belt. The other reading is quieter. Serenus means clear, of weather — an untroubled sky — and it gives serene and, less obviously, serenade: an evening song was sung al sereno, out in the calm night air, and English later assumed the word had something to do with the Italian for evening. It does not.

Meaningscholars disagree

of Ceres — or, in the other reading, calm

With a C, the name points at Ceres, the Roman goddess of grain and harvest, whose name gave cereal. With an S it is Serena, from Latin serenus, clear or calm, which gave serene and serenade. The two are unrelated and this spelling can be read either way.

Cerina sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 32 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cerina went to 7 girls in 2025, but Serina and Seryna are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 47, which makes it the 913th most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,019 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 34,197 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Cerina itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both possible roots are documented Latin words with visible English descendants.
  • Three open syllables with a clear central stress.
  • Two short forms, both of which are full names elsewhere.
What to consider
  • Serena and Sarina are both commoner, so the spelling will be given often.
  • The c is read as an s by English rules, which loses the connection with Ceres that the spelling was reaching for.
  • The two possible meanings have nothing in common, so the answer depends on the family.
