Where it comes from

Our story of Ceaser

American slaveholders named enslaved people from a small and telling stock: classical names — Caesar, Pompey, Cato, Scipio, Venus, Juno — appear in inventories and runaway advertisements far out of proportion to their use among free families. The practice was a form of mockery that also carried an assumption of ownership, since naming is what an owner does. What happened afterward is the part worth knowing: those names were kept, passed down, and carried into freedom by families who chose to hold on to them, and a good many nineteenth-century American men called Caesar are the descendants of people who took a name given as a joke and made it a family's.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Rome itself offered several competing explanations for the family name and none of them is convincing — a head of hair, an elephant in a foreign language, a manner of birth. Roman family names are usually older than the stories told about them, and this is one of those.

Fashion outlook

Ceaser sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name is recognized instantly everywhere in the world.
  • It is short, strong and read correctly in spite of the spelling.
  • It has native forms across the Romance languages.
What to consider
  • Caesar is the standard spelling and his will be corrected to it.
  • The name carries an enormous historical weight that a child does not choose.
  • The Roman family name has no agreed meaning.
