Where it comes from

Our story of Caydon

A cadet, a caddie and a cad are the same word. The Gascon capdet meant a chief or a captain, and it came into French as cadet meaning a younger son — younger sons of the nobility being the ones who went into the army, which is how the word became a term for a junior officer in training. Scots borrowed it as cawdy or caddie for a errand-boy or porter, which is why the man carrying golf clubs is one. And English shortened it to cad, first for an omnibus conductor or an odd-job man, and then, in the hands of nineteenth-century public schoolboys describing anybody not of their sort, into a term for a man who behaves badly. One word for a second son produced a military rank, a golf job and an insult about manners.

Not established

There is no etymology, and saying so is more useful than the alternatives. The family it belongs to formed in the nineteen-nineties out of a front and a very productive ending, and neither piece was ever a word.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second syllable is unstressed and therefore completely free, which is why this family has a dozen spellings of it.

Caydon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 57 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Caydon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
What to consider
  • Caden, Kayden, Caiden and a dozen others are all in the record and all will be written for it.
  • The spelling has to be given aloud every single time.
  • It has no meaning, and the glosses circulating for the family are invented.
