Where it comes from

Our story of Carvin

There are two ways to plank a wooden boat. Clinker building overlaps the planks like weatherboarding and fastens them to each other, so the skin carries the strength; that is the Viking method, and it makes a light, flexible hull. Carvel building butts the planks edge to edge over a heavy internal frame, giving a smooth skin and a stronger, larger vessel that can carry guns. Northern Europe built clinker for centuries, the Mediterranean built carvel, and the shift north in the fifteenth century is one of the technical changes that made ocean voyages and broadside warships possible at all.

Fashion outlook

Carvin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Vin comes off the back of it as a short form and is established in its own right.
  • It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
What to consider
  • Calvin and Garvin are both commoner, so the name will be heard as one of them.
  • It will be read as a misspelling by people who know those names.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
