Carolyn

Carolyn is given to girls far more often — 556,777 girls against 1,620 boys since 1880. See Carolyn as a girl name
Carolyn and Caroline began as two spellings of one name and ended as two names. They rise at different times, they belong to different decades in American ears, and by the middle of the twentieth century families choosing between them were choosing between two distinct things rather than deciding how to write one. Very few pairs of spellings complete that separation, and this one did.

The story of Carolyn
There is a good demonstration of the split in American publishing. The Nancy Drew books are signed by a person who never existed: a syndicate invented the name, hired writers on flat fees, and required them to sign away all credit, so that a series written across decades by several different women appears under one steady byline. The woman who wrote most of the early ones spent much of her life unacknowledged and was only identified publicly late on, when a lawsuit forced the syndicate's records open. The pen name was chosen the way pen names are chosen, for sound and plausibility, and it happens to be the American spelling rather than the English one. That fact alone shows how completely the two forms had separated by then: a syndicate looking for an ordinary, warm, contemporary American name reached for this one and not the other.
Meaning
free man, in the feminine
The name descends through Latin from the Germanic word behind Charles, which meant a man of the free but unlanded class. The feminine was made in Italian and French, and English took the French one. The meaning has not changed in either spelling; what changed is the association. The two forms mean the same thing and summon quite different pictures, which is a useful reminder that a name's meaning and its sense are separate properties.

Three syllables, stress on the first, ending in a short in. Caroline ends in a long line instead, which is the whole audible difference between the two, and it is enough to make them separate names in practice.

Fashion outlook
Carolyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is completely familiar, universally spellable, and has never needed explaining.
- Carrie and Lyn are two entirely different registers and both are available from the start.
- It has a long inherited history without sounding antique.
- Caroline is the more fashionable form now, and this spelling reads as the older of the two.
- It is closely associated with one American generation, and that association is immediate.
- The spelling is on the register for boys as well, in very small numbers.
