The story of Carmelina
Mount Carmel is where Elijah calls down fire in First Kings, and in the twelfth century a group of hermits settled there and became the Carmelite order; the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on 16 July made Carmela, Carmelo and Carmen ordinary names across Italy, Spain and Latin America. Italian naming layers diminutives freely, and Carmelina, Carmelita and Carmella all follow. American records show Carmelina with Italian immigration, peaking in 1926 at the tail of that wave, and it has been rare since 1950.
Meaning
Garden, orchard; the vineyard of God
From Hebrew karmel, a garden, orchard or fruitful place, the name of the mountain ridge above Haifa. The devotional reading vineyard of God is a traditional expansion rather than a strict translation. Italian Carmela is the feminine of Carmelo, and Carmelina adds the diminutive -ina, giving little Carmela.

The Albirta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Carmelina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Albirta climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Albirta's path sketches the road Carmelina is walking now.
Carmelina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
