Carleton
Masculine · “settlement of the free peasants”
A Carleton was the settlement of the free men. Old English ceorl meant a peasant who was not enslaved — the same word as churl, which has fallen a long way — and a carla tun was the farmstead where such men lived. There are dozens on the English map, and Charlton is the same name with a different vowel.

The story of Carleton
The English word churl comes from the same ceorl and now means a boor, which is a considerable demotion for a word that once described a legally free man with rights to land. The place names kept the older sense. Carleton became a surname for families who came from one of those settlements, and then an American given name in the nineteenth century alongside Milton, Clifton and Charlton. It is worth noticing that Carleton and Charles are relatives — the same Germanic word arriving in English twice, once through Old English and once through French.
Meaning
settlement of the free peasants
Old English ceorl names a free man of the lowest rank — not a slave and not a noble — and it is the same word as the Germanic karl behind Charles. Tun is an enclosure, a farmstead and eventually a town. So Carleton and Charlton both describe a settlement of ordinary free men, and the difference between them is which dialect's vowel survived. The derivation is transparent and not disputed.

Fashion outlook
Carleton sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
