Where it comes from

Our story of Burnie

The ending in this name was not yet a woman's spelling when it was given. In the eighteen-eighties, men's names ending in -ie were entirely ordinary — Willie, Charlie, Georgie, Eddie, Bennie — and the record is full of grown men who signed documents that way all their lives. The split came later: as the twentieth century went on, the -ie ending drifted toward women's names and -y stayed with men's, until a man's name written with -ie began to read as a girl's. Nothing about the sound changed. What changed was the convention, and an older name written the older way is now routinely mistaken for a modern respelling of something else.

Three candidates and no evidence. It may be a clipped Bernard, an English or Scottish surname used as a first name, or a northern word meaning a stream, given as a name the way other landscape words were. None can be shown.

Burnie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 26 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Burnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm on sight, as short forms are.
  • It is short and read correctly the first time.
  • It is carried by almost nobody alive.
What to consider
  • The -ie ending now reads as a woman's spelling to most Americans, which it did not when the name was given.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • There is no long form to fall back on and no settled meaning.
