It was common in Yorkshire and East Anglia centuries before any Irish revival. The name came to England from Brittany after the Conquest, was carried by Breton followers who settled heavily in the north and east, and appears in medieval English records in those counties in quantity — long before the nineteenth-century interest in Irish names that is usually credited with putting it into English use. Two separate arrivals, four hundred years apart, from two Celtic countries, converging on the same spelling.
