The story of Bubba
American English has a small class of names made out of family words, and they are almost all Southern: Bubba from brother, Sissy from sister, Sonny from son, Bud and Buddy from a form of brother again, and Nana and Mimi for grandmothers. What is unusual is how far several of them traveled from the household — a name that begins as what your family calls you and ends on a driving license has crossed a real line. Bubba crossed it and then acquired a second life as a shorthand for a regional type, which is a heavy thing for a word that started as a toddler trying to say brother.
Meaning
brother
From a young child's pronunciation of brother, recorded in the American South from the nineteenth century. It functioned first as a household term and then as a name. A Yiddish word, bubbe, meaning grandmother, is spelled similarly and is entirely unrelated.

The Jacobo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Bubba's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jacobo climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jacobo's path sketches the road Bubba is walking now.
Bubba sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
