Brystal
Feminine
Bristol's name means the place at the bridge, and the l on the end is an accent. Speakers in the city add an l to words that end in a vowel, so that area becomes areal and idea becomes ideal, and Brycgstow became Bristol. A city named itself after a local pronunciation habit, and the habit is still there.

The story of Brystal
The Bristol L is a well documented feature of the local accent and it is one of the few English dialect features that has changed a major place name. The historical form of the name is Brycgstow, and Bristol is the result of a final l being added by speakers who add one to any word ending in a schwa. Locals still do it: America becomes Americal, cinema becomes cinemal, and the feature is remarked on constantly. It is called an intrusive l by phoneticians, on the model of the intrusive r that most English speakers use in phrases like law and order. What makes Bristol unusual is that the city adopted the local form as its official name, so a piece of regional pronunciation is now on every map in the world. The American given name Bristol is a separate and recent development, and Brystal is a blend of it with Crystal.

Not established
Brystal is a modern American formation, most likely a blend of Bristol and Crystal, both of which were current as girls' names in the period. Bristol is from Old English brycg, a bridge, and stow, a place or assembly point: the place at the bridge. Crystal is Greek krystallos, ice. The blend inherits neither meaning. It peaks in 2011.

The Lagina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brystal's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lagina climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lagina's path sketches the road Brystal is walking now.
Brystal sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
