Brylynn is built from two elements that both have a claim on Welsh and neither of which is using it. Bry- comes by sound from Bryan or Brynn, and bryn is the Welsh word for a hill; -lynn descends from llyn, the Welsh word for a lake. Two Welsh landscape words meet in an American name that knows about neither. Its peak is 2013.

Where it comes from

Our story of Brylynn

It is a small coincidence worth pointing out. Welsh has two very common landscape words, bryn for a hill and llyn for a lake, and they appear together across the Welsh map — Bryn Llyn, hill of the lake, is the sort of place name Wales has hundreds of. Both words entered English-language naming separately and for unrelated reasons: llyn through the surname and place name Lynn, which became a top-hundred American girls' name in the 1940s, and bryn through the Welsh name Bryn and the Pennsylvania college named for a Welsh estate. By the 2010s both were available as free-floating American name elements, and a family combining them produced, without intending to, a Welsh compound describing a landscape. Whether that counts as meaning is a fair question. It is at least a better story than the alternative, which is that neither half means anything.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No documented meaning for the compound. The -lynn ending descends by sound from Welsh llyn, 'lake', through the place name and the twentieth-century name Lynn, but it carries nothing in this position. The Bry- front may come from Brynn, in which case Welsh bryn, 'hill', is behind it; or from Brianna and Bryan, whose Irish etymology is itself contested. Neither route is documented for this name.

Brylynn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2013, with 37 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Brylynn went to 19 girls in 2025, but Brilynn, Brilyn and Brylin are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 58, which makes it the 902nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,214 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 27,712 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Brylynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
