Where it comes from

The story of Bryceson

Saint Brice was Martin of Tours's successor and by all accounts a difficult man, and his feast on the thirteenth of November is remembered in England for the wrong reason. The massacre was ordered after years of Danish raiding and it made things considerably worse. The name itself traveled to Scotland, where it became a Border surname and then a given name, and reached America from there. What is new is the ending. Patronymic surnames in -son are real and old — Jackson, Johnson, Harrison, Anderson — but they were formed centuries ago from names that were common then. Bryceson was made recently, from a name that was not, to sound like one of them.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Bryce is from the Latin name Bricius, borne by a fifth-century bishop of Tours, and its meaning has never been established; a Gaulish origin is likely. The -son ending here is a modern addition: Bryceson has not existed as an English surname, and the name is built to look like one.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Bryce works immediately as a short form and is a full name of its own.
  • Two syllables that everyone reads correctly on sight.
  • The saint behind it is documented, with a date and a see.
What to consider
  • Bryson is far commoner and this will be read as a variant of it.
  • The -son ending was never a real surname here, which some people notice.
  • Neither the name nor the ending has a documented meaning.
