Where it comes from

The story of Brooklynne

The Dutch West India Company held New Netherland from 1624 to 1664, and the English takeover renamed the colony and the city but left the villages, farms and geography largely alone. What survives is a layer of Dutch under the English surface: Brooklyn, Harlem, Flushing, Bushwick, Gravesend, Yonkers from jonkheer, a young gentleman, and the Bowery from bouwerij, a farm. Words came too — cookie, stoop, boss, coleslaw, waffle. Brooklyn became an American girls' name in the 1990s and rose quickly through the 2000s; the respellings followed, and Brooklynne peaks in 2009.

From Breukelen, a Dutch village name of uncertain sense

Brooklyn is from Breukelen, a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht, transferred to the New Netherland settlement in 1646. The Dutch name is variously read as broken land or marshland, and is not settled. The English word brook does not enter into it; the resemblance is a coincidence of anglicization. Brooklynne is a modern American respelling with a doubled n and a silent e.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Brooklynne went to 14 girls in 2025, but Brooklyne is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 24, which makes it the 936th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,555 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 66,969 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Brooklynne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
