Where it comes from

Our story of Brookelynn

This is folk etymology happening in real time, and it is worth watching. Brooklyn rose as an American girls' name from the 1990s, and to an English-speaking eye the word looks like two familiar names run together — Brooke and Lynn — even though it is neither. So families began writing it that way: Brookelyn, Brookelynn, Brooklynne, Brooklin. The respelling makes visible an analysis of the name that is historically wrong and entirely reasonable, because that is what the letters look like. Exactly the same thing happened centuries ago to words like sparrowgrass for asparagus and crayfish for the French écrevisse. Brookelynn's peak in 2008 sits inside Brooklyn's own American high period.

Meaningscholars disagree

Broken land, if from Brooklyn; a stream, if from Brooke

Brooklyn comes from Breukelen, a village in Utrecht whose name is generally read as broken land or marshland, brought to New Netherland in 1646. Brooke is a separate English surname and word for a small stream. Lynn is from Welsh llyn, a lake, or from Linda. Brookelynn assembles the last two into a spelling of the first, and none of the three meanings applies to the whole.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Brookelynn went to 23 girls in 2025, but Brookelyn is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 37, which makes it the 923rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,487 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 43,440 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 69,881 for Brookelynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Brooke and Lynn are both complete, established names usable alone.
  • Everyone can say it after one hearing.
  • It sounds warm and familiar because both halves are.
What to consider
  • Nobody will spell it correctly from hearing it.
  • Brooklyn, Brooklynn, Brookelyn and Brookelynn are four spellings of one sound.
  • The two-word reading is historically wrong, which a curious child will discover.

Nobody names a baby alone.
