The story of Brithany
When Germanic settlers took over lowland Britain, Brittonic-speaking families crossed to the Armorican peninsula in numbers large enough to give it their name and to keep their language, which is why Breton is still spoken there. The English word Brittany named the region for centuries before anyone used it for a child; that happened in the United States in the nineteen-seventies and eighties, and the name became enormously common. Latin American families adopted it too, and Brithany is the spelling that came out of that adoption, with an h that English never had.
Meaning
of Brittany; land of the Britons
The French region Bretagne takes its name from the Britons who moved there from Britain between the fifth and seventh centuries. Latin Britannia named the island first and the peninsula afterwards, which is why the two are still called the same thing in most languages.
