Britani
Feminine · “from Brittany”
Britani uses single letters throughout, which is the rarest choice in a family famous for doubling. Almost every other spelling of this name has a doubled t, and several have doubled letters elsewhere; this one has none, which makes it the plainest version of a name that generated more elaborate variants than nearly anything else of its decade.

The story of Britani
The duchy stayed separate for a very long time. It was an independent state through most of the Middle Ages, was joined to France by a marriage treaty at the end of the fifteenth century, and kept its own parliament, its own tax arrangements and a good deal of its own law until the revolution abolished all of it in seventeen eighty-nine. That is nearly three centuries of formal union with substantial autonomy inside it. The regional identity that survived is a direct consequence: a place that keeps its institutions keeps its sense of itself, and Brittany's is stronger than that of most French regions for exactly that reason. The name reached American girls with no awareness of any of this, as a pleasant-sounding place.
Meaning
from Brittany
The region takes its name from British settlers who crossed the Channel after Rome withdrew, and the personal name is the region used directly. The reading is a location. The single letters in this spelling bring it slightly closer to the French form of the region's name, which also has one t, though that is almost certainly accidental.
How the name formed

BRIT-uh-nee
Three syllables, stress on the first, with the middle one reduced almost to nothing. The single t suggests a long first vowel that the name does not have, which is the one respect in which the plain spelling is misleading.

Fashion outlook
Britani sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is universally familiar and never mispronounced.
- It is the least decorated spelling in a family full of decoration.
- Brit and Bree are both strong short forms and neither dates the name.
- The single t suggests a long vowel and the name does not have one.
- Brittany is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected into it.
- It is very tightly dated to a stretch of the nineteen eighties and nineties.
