In Sweden and Norway, Brita has been an everyday women's name for six hundred years. In America it is a jug in the door of the fridge. That is an unusual thing to happen to a name — not a brand borrowing a name, which happens constantly, but a brand taking a name over so completely that the older use becomes the one that needs explaining.

How old is the name Brita?

Brita first appears in US birth records in 1916 — 109 years ago. The typical Brita alive today was born around 1980, making them about 45 years old. About 1,000 people named Brita are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Brita

Birgitta of Sweden was a noblewoman, a mother of eight and a widow before she was anything else, and the order she founded had a rule that ought to be better known. Her houses held nuns and monks inside one enclosure, and the head of the whole community — men included — was the abbess. The priests were there to serve the sisters, not to govern them, and Birgitta was explicit about it. She also wrote down her revelations, argued with popes in writing, walked to Rome and stayed there, and was made a saint within twenty years of her death. Six centuries later she was named one of the patron saints of Europe.

Meaningscholars disagree

the exalted one

Brita is the everyday Swedish form of Birgitta, which came north from the Irish Brigid — a name attached to a goddess before it was attached to a saint, and generally traced to a word for height or exaltation. Irish etymology of that antiquity is rarely settled, and this one is argued over like the rest. What is not in doubt is the route: an Irish name that traveled to Scandinavia, became thoroughly Swedish there, and came back out to the rest of Europe wearing Swedish clothes.

How the name formed

  1. Irish Brigid, a goddess before a saint
  2. Birgitta established in Sweden by the fourteenth century
  3. Brita and Britta as everyday Swedish forms
  4. carried to America with Scandinavian migration
  5. a German water filter takes the name worldwide in 1966

In Swedish the first vowel is long: BREE-tah. Americans usually say BRIT-uh, with a short vowel, because that is how the company says it in its own advertising. Both are in honest use and she will hear both.

Brita sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1980, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Brita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables, five letters, no silent anything, and it works in English, German and all three Scandinavian languages without alteration.
  • It has a genuinely formidable namesake, and a rule about who was in charge that is still worth telling a daughter.
  • It is rare in America while being completely ordinary somewhere else, which is a comfortable place for a name to sit.
What to consider
  • In the United States the first association will be a water filter, every time, for at least another generation.
  • The two pronunciations do not resolve — the Swedish one and the advertised one are both correct and both common.
  • It will be written Britta and Britt by people who have met those and not this one.
