Bridgett
Feminine · “Old Irish Brigit”
Brigid means the exalted one, and the root goes a long way. Proto-Celtic brigant, high, gives the Brigantes tribe of northern Britain and the goddess Brigantia; the same Indo-European root gives German Berg, a mountain, English borough and Sanskrit brhati. A very large word, meaning high, standing behind an ordinary Irish name.

The story of Bridgett
The brigant root is one of the more traceable Indo-European elements and it names high things across the family. The Brigantes were the largest tribal confederation in northern Britain when the Romans arrived, and their name appears to mean the high ones, whether in the sense of elevated land or of status. Brigantia was their goddess and a Roman inscription in Yorkshire records her. In Germanic the same root gives Berg, a mountain, and the -burg and -borough of a great many place names, which were built on high ground. In Sanskrit it gives brhati, lofty, and the name Brhaspati for a deity. So the Irish goddess, the Yorkshire tribe, the German mountain and the Sanskrit epithet all descend from one word about height, and only the Irish branch produced a name still given to children.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
