Where it comes from

Our story of Bobbette

Bob does a great deal of work. It is a haircut, cut level at the jaw, named for the same reason a horse's docked tail is bobbed. It is a curtsy — to bob is to dip, which is also what a cork does in water and what a person does to avoid something thrown. It is the weight on the end of a pendulum or a plumb line. It was British slang for a shilling for two centuries and nobody has established why. It is a small bunch, as in a bob of flowers. It is a sled. And to bob for apples is to dip the head. Dictionaries divide these across several unrelated entries and admit that the relationships are unclear, which is what happens to a short, blunt, useful syllable over eight hundred years.

The front is the familiar form of Robert, arrived at by a rhyming habit that English applied to a handful of names and then abandoned. The ending is a French diminutive. Nothing records what a family meant by joining them.

Fashion outlook

Bobbette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Bobette, Bobbetta and Babette are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The front is a man's familiar form, which some bearers mind and most do not.
  • It reads as belonging firmly to one mid-century generation.
